Personal safety and Erin’s Law are one of the most important lessons to teach but also one of the most difficult. This resource focuses on the idea of “sticky situations” upper elementary students may encounter (including but not exclusive to sexual abuse) and deciding what to do in them by answering three questions: What does my gut say? What could happen? What would my role model do?
This lesson has been converted into Google Slides™ for you to use during distance learning. While originally created as a companion to Julia Cook’s The Kid Trapper, it also works as a standalone lesson if you do not have access to the book now.
Included in this resource:
• Written lesson plan with ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors and CASEL competencies, including discussion questions to use with the book
• Collaborative learning activity to practice determining safe versus unsafe choices (with 16 situations, allowing you to select the ones most pertinent to your students)
• Follow-up worksheet
• Parent/ caregiver note (in both English and Spanish).
If you plan to use this resource with the story “The Kid Trapper” by Julia Cook, know that the book is not included in this resource and needs to be purchased separately.
