Dual Relationships
A dual relationship occurs when a counselor or therapist has more than one role with a client (for example, providing therapy for a child you also coach on a sports team). Dual relationships can create conflicts of interest, blurred boundaries, and power imbalances that may interfere with clinical judgment or harm the client. Ethical practice generally requires avoiding dual relationships when possible and setting clear boundaries when unavoidable.
